Kidd moves closer to history as Dallas blasts Phoenix

Kidd finished with 19 points and 20 assists as Dallas routed Phoenix.

It’s easy to forget just how good Jason Kidd has been throughout his career.  Sunday offered a strong reminder.

Kidd had 16 assists by halftime to move into third place all-time in NBA history behind only Mark Jackson and John Stockton.  He sat out the fourth quarter as Dallas cruised to a 140-116 victory.

Dallas took a 81-59 lead at the half following Josh Howard’s 75-foot shot at the buzzer.  Phoenix played horrific defense, prompting ABC analyst Jeff Van Gundy to question if the Suns were ready to play what the biggest game of the season.

Josh Howard said that the game was so big he just had to play, and finished with 24 points in 27 minutes.  We’ll see if he plays again before the playoffs – don’t count on it.

The Mavs moved within a victory of clinching a playoff berth.  The Suns are within a single game of being officially eliminated, although at this point it is basically over.

The 35 year-old Kidd has struggled at times this season, but will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the best point guards in NBA history.  His all-around numbers are among the best for any guard to ever play the game.

Kidd is a free agent after the season, and will likely move on with Dallas looking to get younger.
