This is Levance Fields leading Pitt over Xavier

March 26, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Levance Fields hasn’t looked like himself during the NCAA tournament – until late in games.  Fields cashed a tough 3-pointer with 50 seconds remaining to give Pitt a one-point lead, and made a breakaway layup with 24 seconds left to secure a 60-55 win.

Here are the highlights:

Xavier controlled the game in the first half, but was held to 18 points in the second half and really sputtered down the stretch.  B.J Raymond led the Musketeers with 15 points, and Derrick Brown added 14 points and nine rebounds.

Sam Young scored 19 to lead Pitt.  DeJuan Blair scored 10 points on 5-16 shooting and added 17 rebounds.

I continue to be impressed with Young’s ability.  He should be at least a top-15 pick in the 2009 NBA draft, especially given the limited talent pool this year.

With the win, Pitt coach Jamie Dixon advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time in his career.  The Panthers face Villanova on Saturday in what should be a very interesting game.

Stay tuned.
